DEBORAH STRONG
AFCA

coloured pencil drawings

Coloured pencil drawing has been an important aspect of Deborah's repertoire throughout her career as an artist. Known for portraits of companion animals, Deborah applies her skill and experience with this exacting medium to depict birds as well as a range of other subjects. She is recognized as a Canadian Drawing Master by the Drawing Society of Canada.

Wild Muscovy
Coloured pencil

Unlike domestic muscovy ducks - plump, slow-moving barnyard birds - wild muscovies are lean, athletic creatures. This drake exhibits the colourful, leathery facial wattle that's characteristic of the breed.

Forest Wildcats: Cougar and Tiger Lilies
Coloured pencil

I couldn't resist the idea of placing a wild feline among forest flowers named for another type of cat.

Song of the Tropics: Mockingbird
Coloured pencil

These plain-looking birds have the most beautiful, warbling song, and their adaptable nature means they can be found in even the most urban setting.

Green on Green: Palm Tanager
Coloured pencil

Aptly named, the lively palm tanager's colouring mimics that of its habitat.

Friendly Faces
Coloured pencil, Image size: 14"x18"

This pair of bay horses display friendly curiosity. You can almost hear them asking "got any carrots?"

Red-breasted Nuthatch
Coloured pencil, Image size: 4 3/4" x 5 1/2"

I find these lively birds difficult to observe and photograph, but I was lucky enough to have one pose for me at my bird feeder last winter.

Fledgling Wren
Coloured pencil, Image size: 3 1/2" x 3 1/2"

I was fortunate to see a family of fledgling wrens on their first foray out of the next. The anxious parents were overseeing the expedition, chattering noisily to their brood.

Barn Swallow
Coloured pencil, Image size: 6 1/2" x 13"

I observed this barn swallow nesting at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Ladner. The contrast of the glossy blue-black feathers of the bird and the chaotic mud and grass nest made for interesting subject matter.

Wren & Salmonberry
Coloured pencil, Image size: 5 1/2" x 9 1/2"
Selected for exhibition, Coloured Pencil Society of Canada's
National Exhibition, 2012.

Wrens move like tiny shadows through the forest, scampering mouse-like through the undergrowth. Most easily spotted during seasons when foliage is sparse, their distinguishing feature is their short tail held at a jaunty, upright angle. I feel fortunate whenever I am able to glimpse one of these elusive birds.

Gypsy Cobbs
Coloured pencil, Image size: 14"x18"

On a drizzly morning while out walking I spotted this mare and foal. I was moved to capture the horses and the moment in this drawing: their interesting markings, the essence of their environment, and the protective, maternal behaviour of the mare towards her baby.

Steller's Jay
Coloured pencil, Image size: 5"x8"

These rowdy birds make their presence known wherever they are found, be it a suburban neighbourhood or secluded forest. They regularly dine at the feeder outside my studio window.

Flicker
Coloured pencil, Image size: 5"x8"

The saying “form follows function” is nowhere more evident than in the animal world. The physical structure and plumage of a flicker, a common North American bird, has evolved to compliment its environment perfectly. In this drawing, I sought to depict the bird’s absolute harmony with its environment.

Bird on a Wire (Marsh Wren)
Coloured pencil, Image size: 5"x5"

In the spring at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Ladner, BC, the marsh comes alive with these small birds. The males broadcast their presence with a distinctive call, defining their territories and warning potential trespassing rivals to stay away.

Trillium
Coloured pencil, Image size: 6.5"x6.5"

Our local woodlands abound with these graceful flowers each spring, a sure sign that winter has retreated for another year.

By the Window
Coloured pencil, Image size: 9"x11"

Any housecat can spend hours sitting in a window, enjoying the comforts of indoor life and the entertainment provided by the great outdoors. A sudden movement can instantly capture their rapt attention.

Purple Honeycreeper
Coloured pencil; Image size: 5"x5"

Jacobin Hummingbird
Coloured pencil; Image size: 5"x5"

One of Trinidad's hidden jewels is the Asa Wright Nature Centre tucked away in the island's northern mountain range. The old plantation site is home to a selection of the island's vast number of bird species, many of which can be viewed from the comfort of the balcony of the plantation house.

My Horse Duke
Coloured pencil on textured illustration board;
Image size 25"x25"

Duke was my best friend. He came into my life when I was a teenager and he was a two-year-old, and he was with me till he passed away in 2003, just shy of his 30th birthday. A plaque in the "Spirit of the Horse" Memorial Gardens in south Langley's Campbell Valley Park sums up my feelings: "He carried me away from my cares for nearly three decades. I will cherish his memory forever in my heart."
