2017 News - Taking a break

I'm taking a break from my regularly scheduled classes for a while to spend time making art in my studio and to focus on some other projects. However, if you belong to a group that would like to have me come and present a workshop or two, please contact me to discuss the possibilities.

coloured pencil classes
Coloured pencil is a versatile medium that's clean, non-toxic and highly portable, and it offers a wealth of possibilities for beginners and more experienced artists alike. I have specialized in coloured pencil throughout my art career and I'm pleased to be able to share my knowledge in a selection of hands-on workshops. Each workshop includes a step-by-step handout that helps you cement the skills you've learned. All workshops use wax based Prismacolor Premier Soft Core pencils which are readily available at most art supply stores. You don't need to know how to draw to benefit from these sessions!

Coloured Pencil Boot Camp
Formerly called "A Fruitful Day: Coloured Pencil Techniques" this popular one-day workshop focuses entirely on various techniques for working with Prismacolor Premier Soft Core coloured pencils. Learn skills, theories, tips and tools through the completion of a series of exercises and small drawings. This is an excellent starting point for coloured pencil beginners, offering a foundation from which to move forward into other classes and projects. Those with previous experience can expect to learn new things. You will work hard in this class! Supplies must be purchased in advance (a list will be provided).

Explorations in coloured pencil

Learn techniques for working on a tinted background while creating an image of two cheerful chickadees perched on budding branches. Beginners will learn valuable skills and those with more experience can expand their repertoire. Supplies must be purchased in advance (a list will be provided).

The Cat's Meow
This session focuses on capturing the qualities of our feline companions - their fur, eyes and other features. Shading and textural techniques will be explored using my cheeky orange cat Hugo as our subject. Please bring photos of your own cat(s) for group discussion. Basic techniques will be covered, making this workshop suitable for beginners as well as those with more experience. Supplies must be purchased in advance (a list will be provided).

Birds in Coloured Pencil

Come share my passion for birds in these one-day workshops. You'll be guided step by step through the process of completing a coloured-pencil drawing of a bird working from a stock photograph for reference. Learn techniques that apply to creating likenesses of birds, including rendering feathers, eyes and other textures. Supplies must be purchased in advance (a list will be provided).

Spotted Towhee
This common back-yard bird posed on a rough log makes a perfect subject for a beginner or for those interested in learning about techniques for rendering birds in coloured pencil.

Steller's Jay
These lively birds with their vivid plumage make a suitable subject for a beginner or those with some experience.

Great Blue Heron
A majestic heron posed in a watery background makes an interesting and challenging learning opportunity.

Pileated Woodpecker
This striking woodpecker perched on a rough tree trunk offers a challenging opportunity to explore effective ways to work with black and achieve a range of textural effects.

Horse Portrait in Coloured Pencil
Windblown Pony

This cheeky pony makes a great subject to learn about creating a horse portrait. During this two-day workshop we will explore his structure, textures and character while applying techniques you can use in the future for making lifelike equine portraits. Please bring along photos of your own horse(s) for discussion. Supplies must be purchased in advance (a list will be provided).

Advanced Coloured Pencil

Forest Wildcat

Take coloured pencil to the next level! This two-day workshop explores the possibilities of working with coloured pencil on a textured surface and introduces the concept of working with an under-painting. Begin with an introduction to techniques and then move into the step-by-step completion of a drawing of a wild cougar stalking through its rainforest home. Learn methods to create depth and tonal values as well as a range of visual effects. Participants are responsible for purchasing supplies in advance (a list will be provided).

Open Coloured Pencil Workshop
You choose the subject! Come and work on a project, or a series of projects, under my experienced guidance. It could be a bird, a pet portrait, or some other subject that interests you. You must have experience with basic coloured pencil techniques. The small group setting is the next best thing to a private session and ensures everyone gets lots of attention and assistance.

silk painting classes
Hand painted silk is a wonderful, colourful medium that allows you to make art you can hang on the wall, wear, or use in a variety of creative ways. I have more than 25 years of experience working with silk and dyes and will share what I know during these fun and informative sessions.

Silk Painting - The Basics
There's something totally mesmerizing about the way dyes interact with silk! In this hands-on workshop you will learn about painting on silk using resist and steam-set dyes (serti method). I will discusses materials, methods and processes, and demonstrate painting techniques. You will then will create a small greeting card sized sample as well as a larger 15"x15" square that can be framed as a piece of art or turned into such things as a decorative cushion cover.

No experience is required and all materials are included. Bring your own ideas or work from one of my designs.

Silk Scarf Workshop
Join me for this one-day workshop that focuses entirely on designing and creating a luxurious silk scarf (11"x60") using resist and steam-set dyes. Bring your ideas and see them come to life in a beautiful, wearable piece of art or work from one of my designs.

Advanced Silk Painting

If you have previous experience you may join one of the above workshops and work independently on a piece of your choosing. I'll supply the materials (you can choose the size of the silk) and offer assistance and guidance to help you achieve your goals. I'll also take care of steaming your finished piece. You must have taken a previous workshop with me and have an understanding of silk painting techniques.
